Thirunelli Temple is located near to Tholpetty Wild Life Sanctuary and Pakshipathalm Bird Sanctuary. It is one of the most ancient temples in Kerala. Lord Vishnu is the principal deity of the Temple. The Temple is believed to be as old as 2000 years or even more. Thirunelli temple draws pilgrims from all over. Majority of people come primarily for ancestral rites. The rituals are performed on the banks of a stream which flows down from Mount Brahmagiri. There is a small man made pond across the stream, called Papanasini which is considered to be relieving sins of pilgrims who take bath in it. Devotees are to take a dip in Papanashini before and after performing ancestral rights. Another pond named Panchatheertha is also situated near by the Temple. There is a rock in the centre of the pond, with the impression of feet, which belong to Lord Vishnu, as per belief. The mindblowing Brahmagiri hills on one side provides an artist’s canvas type picture and the surrounding lush green forests makes the temple premises a valley of tranquility. Thirunelli temple is an embodiment of ancient temple architecture. The temple is open throughout the year
