Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary visit is a “must do” experiences on a trip to Wayanad. Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary consists of two major Wildlife Sanctuaries. Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is located near to the Kerala-Karnataka Border on Mysore Road. Muthanga is connected with Mudumalai Wild life Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu and Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Karnataka.
Wild animals including mighty Elephants and Bisons, uncontrollable Blue Bulls, dangerous Tigers and unpredictable Leopards, various species of Deer and Monkeys, are seen here. Wayanad wildlife safari is being organized by Forest Department in two sessions, in Morning and Evening.
Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary Tickets
Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary online booking is not available presently (Apr 2025). There are morning and afternoon safaris at Muthanga and Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary. As the tickets are available only at the counter, it is suggested to arrive at 0600 h for the morning safari and 1400 h for the afternoon safari. To get a ticket for Safari, one may have to queue up at 0600 h for the morning session and at 1400 h for the evening session. The jungle safari is conducted for almost one and a half hours.
Wildlife safari in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is an exciting encounter with nature. If it’s your day, you might make eye contact with the elusive tiger or see a spectacular herd of elephants or even a towering Indian bison. Other possible sightings are spotted deer, Malabar giant squirrels, langurs, Sambar deer etc. Keep a watch out for leopards, sloth bears, dholes, and even the uncommon civet cats. How to Reach Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary?
Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is located 17 km from Sulthan Bathery, Wayanad on Mysore road. You can avail Wildlife Safari in canter van by forest department or by jeeps. If you are traveling from Bangalore/Mysore to Wayanad and you arrive by noon, it is better to do the safari at Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary and further travel to Sulthan Bathery and beyond. If you are a wildlife enthusiast, you can plan to do Bandipur Safari in the morning and do Muthanga Safari in the afternoon. Bandipur National Park is just 17 km deviation at Gundlupete from Mysore – Wayanad route. For a Wayanad Day Trip, Muthanga can be clubbed with Edakkal Caves, Heritage Museum and Sulthan Bathery Jain Temple.
How to Reach Tholdpetty Wildlife Sanctuary?
Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary, is another vibrant part of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. It is just 24 km away from Mananthavady, Wayanad. Tholpetty can be combined with Kuruva Island, Thirunelli Temple and Pazhassi Park. Nearest Airport to Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary is Kannur, which is 87 km away.
Either of the sanctuaries can be clubbed in your regular Wayanad Tour Package. Guests can be picked up within Wayanad or from Calicut, Mysore, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Mangalore, Coorg, Kochi etc for Wayanad Wildlife Safari packages.
