Kodaikanal

Kodaikanal, located in the Dindugal district in the state of Tamil Nadu at an elevation of about 7000 ft, is one of the most popular hill stations in the state. Constructed by the British in 1845 as a summer escape, it is surrounded by the evergreen quality of the Western Ghats and is covered with eucalyptus trees, cypress trees and the Shola forests. Water lilies that lie within the ponds and lakes are a pleasant sight that enriches the beauty of this hill station. Being a hill station, Kodaikanal remains cool throughout the year and makes for a great summer retreat. The most famous fauna in Kodaikanal is the Neelakurinji  flower that blooms once in every 12 years. Kodaikanal lake is the town’s most popular attraction, drawing thousands of tourists every year who seek to take a boat ride in its serene and blue waters. It is of no wonder that Kodaikanal has always been a favourite for the newlyweds, who include this among one of their honeymoon destinations. Other places that are a must visit here are – Bryant’s Park, Kurinji Andavar Temple, Pine forest, Coaker’s walk, Pillar rocks, Guna caves are among some of the locations that are not to be missed. Kodaikanal also has a lot to offer for trekking, boating and cycling enthusiasts. Places to Visit in Kodaikanal

Kodaikanal lake: This 59-acre artificial lake was created in 1863 by Sir Vere Levinge. It has since become synonymous with Kodaikanal and continues to be one of the most famous places to visit in Kodaikanal. There is also a boat club that allows visitors to float over its blue waters and take in the surrounding scenery. There is a 5 km walkway that can make for a great walk surrounding this lake, all the while taking in the moist breeze emanating from the lake. The charges for the Boating activities are as follows: Rs.40 for pedal boat and Rs.70 for 4 person pedal boat.

Bryant park: Bryant park is a botanical garden surrounding the Kodai lake. It is located at about half kilometer from the bus stand and is home to a wide array of shrubs, flowers, and cactus. The place also is home to a eucalyptus tree from 1857 and a Bodhi tree which gives it an aura of spiritual significance. A nominal entry fee of Rs.5 is chargeable to gain entry to the park.

Coaker’s walk: Coaker’s walk is a kilometer long pedestrian pathway that was constructed by Lt.Coaker back in1872.A ticket is to be bought to enter the pathway.Coaker’s walk is a snake-like pathway surrounded by beautiful plants, trees and flowers.This is one place that is not be missed on your trip to Kodaikanal. A nominal entry fee of Rs.10 per person is chargeable to gain entry to the park.

Green valley view: Located at about 5.5 kms from Kodai lake, green valley view, also known as suicide point is a valley with a fall of 5000ft. A staircase leads to the topmost point from which the view can be breathtaking. There are also a lot of monkeys that inhabit this area which can be an added attraction for visitors.

Pine forest: Started as a pine tree plantation by the British in 1906, the pine forest of Kodaikanal has since become a popular tourism spot in the city. Located at a distance of about 8 km from the bus stand, the forest is one of the most peaceful locations one can hope to find. The huge pine trees provide a cool and shady environment, where one can simply stroll by or take a break under the shades.

Kodaikanal solar observatory: The observatory is located at about 7 kilometers from the bus stand and is open daily to the public. There is also a science museum, library and telescope, for nighttime star gazing.

Pillar rocks: Three Massive pillar like rocks that stand 400 meters high are located about 8 km from the bus stand. An amazing bird’s eye view is provided by them of the surrounding landscape.

Kurinji Andavar Murugan temple: A home to lord Muruga, the Kurinji Andavar Murugan temple, is located about 4 kms from the bus stand and is famous for its kurinji flowers. These flowers bloom only once in 12 years and make for a rare spectacle if you happen to visit during the year that it blooms.
