Badami is a small town located in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka. Once home and a capital of the Chalukya dynasty during the 6th and 7th century, it is no wonder that the place has a rich and intriguing heritage. The place has an entry fee of Rs.10 for people above 15 years of age.
Agastya lake: This large lake is located near to the cave temples, and is a sight to behold. Surrounded by the temples and lush greenery, the lake is said to have healing properties and is visited by many pilgrims from all walks of life.
Bhuthanatha temple: The Bhuthanatha temple complex consists of two temples and is made of sandstone. It is dedicated to lord Shiva, in his form called Bhuthanatha, and is highly revered by many Shiva followers. The construction of the temple was started in the 7th century but it was completed only in the 11th century. There are also various carvings and engravings of various figures like lord Vishnu and some Jain figures.
Malegitti Shivalaya temple: Situated on top of a hill some 2 km from the town is the Malegetti Shivalaya temple and fort. The temple is dedicated to lord Shiva in the avatar of a garland maker. There are various sculptures and inscriptions here that tell its history and to glorify its marvel we can see other such constructions of the Dravidian architecture.
Banashankari temple: The temple was built in the 7th century by Chalukya kings and is home to the deity Banashankari. It is said that Banashankari is an incarnation of lord Durga. The idol of Durga with a demon crushed under her foot can be seen carved out of black stone here. The temple exhibits traits of Dravidian architecture and is revered and oft visited by many locals and tourists.
Badami fort: The Badami fort is often visited by tourists who visit the Badami cave temples, as the fort is located in front of the cave temples. It consists of two Shivalayas, one dedicated to lord Shiva and one to lord Ganesha. A must see on your visit, the fort was an ancient home for many Chalukyan kings.
