Nagarhole National Park, also known as Rajiv Gandhi national park is in Karnataka. It is one the most famous tiger reserves in India. Nagar means snake and hole means stream, which is appropriate since Nagarhole has many serpent like streams within its enclosure. As with quite a few other unique locations in India, the Nagarhole national park has been under consideration as a UNESCO world heritage site. Covering an area of about 641 sq km, the park is a home to the Bengal tiger and the Indian elephant. The animals dwell in an area that is surrounded by beautiful hills, small water bodies and a dense forest.
The landscape is green throughout, mostly in the form of swamps, trees and wetlands. The park was first formed in 1955 and then extended again in 1975, when it was officially recognized as a national park. Though the elephant and the tiger are its more famous and more numbered inhabitants, the park is host to a variety of fauna like the leopard, wild boar, gaur, spotted deer, Indian wild dog, hyena, antelopes, monitor lizards, marsh crocodile to name a few. And it doesn’t have any shortage of birds as well. There are about 250 species of birds in Nagarhole, including exotic ones like the blue-bearded bee-eater, scarlet minivet and Malabar whistling thrush, ospreys, woodland birds, painted bush quail, which makes Nagarhole an ideal getaway for bird enthusiasts.
There are quite a few resorts and hotel in and around the place. Most famous resorts of Nagarhole area are Kabini River lodge and Orange County Resort. This famous tiger reserve of South India allows you to take in the beauty of the place in awe, all the while enjoying the jungle safari if you are game for it. The Jeep safari and elephant safari are the two main attractions. The sanctuary is also a haven for trekking enthusiasts as the nearby Brahmagiri mountains provide an opportunity for trekking and a chance to get a view of the luscious landscape from atop the mountains.
