Halebidu

  • Famous Historical Place of Karnataka!!

Halebidu

Halebidu is located in Hassan district of Karnataka. Its name stands for “old city” and it was the capital of the Hoysala empire during the 12th century. Hoysala architecture can be viewed throughout and the Hoysaleswara and Kedareswara temples are best examples of this style. Other major attractions include the Santaleswara temple, Basadi Halli and the Yagachi dam. The surrounding of the temples located in Halebidu takes us back to the 12th century to help us experience the past with all its glory. The remnants and signatures of the ancient culture are still embedded on the rocks. The engravings of these works are made from nothing else but rock and a chisel. Large carved out monolith structures can make us wonder in awe as to how these creations were brought about by a culture having access to only primitive technology when compared to today’s standards. Halebidu is a must-see place for history buffs and almost anyone with an appreciation of great art. The destination can be combined with Belur, another important place of Hoysala Kingdom.

Tourist Places in Halebidu

Kedareshwara temple: One of the main temples located in Halebidu, the Kedareshwara temple was constructed by Hoysala king Veera Bala II in the 12th century. The main deity is Shiva, and tourists can see the Shiva lingam or Kedareshwara in the temple. There are three summits at the temple; each dignifying a different god. Passages from the Ramayana and Bhagavad Gita are displayed by careful sculpting of the friezes.

Hoysaleswara/Santaleswara temple: The other important temple in Halebidu is the Hoysaleswara temple by king Vishnuvardhan and was completed in the 12th century. The Hoysaleswara temple enshrines both Hoysaleswara and Santaleswara. Hoysaleswara is lord Shiva and Santaleswara, his wife Santala. The Garuda Stambha and the sculpted pillars and friezes along with the inscriptions of epic heroes and legends, tell a story that is bound to fascinate the spiritual and non-spiritual alike.

Basadi halli: Located barely a few steps away from the Kedareshwara temple, Basadi Halli is an important Jain temple located in Halebidu. The temple is known for its fine sculptures of pillars and its three shrines.Other major attractions include the Adinathaswamy and Shanthinathaswamy located at the centre and east side respectively, and other sculptures of Jain deities.

Yagachi dam: The Yagachi reservoir is located on the route between Belur and Chikmagalur. The dam extends to more than a kilometre and is 965 ft above sea level.Surrounding sceneries can be really beautiful with the noisy but beautiful sounds of the waters of the dams are truly music to the ears.
