Edakkal Caves

Edakkal Caves

Edakkal caves are two natural caves (cleft between rocks) on a mountain called Ambukuthy Mala near Ambalavayal Town in Wayanad. It is believed to be an amazing 7000 years old wonder. The cleft is naturally formed out of disposition of three huge boulders with 96 Feet length and 22 Feet width possess a depth of 30 Feet. It has been attracting the attention of historians and archeologists owing to the pre-historic engraving in the Cave from the Neolithic man, indicating a prehistoric civilization or settlement in the region.  Explored by Fred Fawcet a police official of erstwhile Malabar state, in 1894, who identified the engravings and pictures as one of the richest and authentic pictographic gallery of its kind, is surely a feast for historians and other researchers. These Stone-Age carvings of human and animal figures, tools used by humans and symbols (yet to be deciphered) are rare and are only known examples from South India. The oldest Petroglyphs inside the cave may date back to over 7000 years. The other drawings range over period from 5000 BC to 1000 BC. The youngest group of drawings was in the news for a possible connection to Indus Valley Civilization.  It is one of the most visited tourist places in Wayanad for its Historical importance and for trekking possibilities.
