Banasura Sagar Dam Padinjarathara Kerala is the biggest earth dam in India and the second largest in Asian Continent. It is built at the base of Banasura Hill, across a small river Karimanthodu-one of the tributaries of the Kabani River. The project started in 1979 with the prime motive support Kakkayam Hydro-electric Power Project. Banasura consists of a Dam and a Canal project with the additional aim of satisfying the demand for irrigation and drinking water. The region is known to have water scarcity during peak summer. It is one of the most visited tourist places in Wayanad now. Protected and titivated by the evergreen mountains all around, it has a vast catchment area which provides ample area to enjoy the speed boat/ motor boat experience to the maximum.
