Banasura Sagar Dam

Banasura Sagar Dam is the biggest earth dam in India and second largest in Asian Continent. It is built at the base of Banasura Hill, across a small river Karimanthodu-one of the tributaries of Kabani River. The project, started in 1979 with prime motive support Kakkayam Hydro-electric Power Project. Banasura consists of a Dam and a Canal project with the additional aim of satisfying the demand for irrigation and drinking water. The region is known to have water scarcity during peak summer. It is one of the most visited tourist places in Wayanad now. Protected and titivated by the evergreen mountains all around, it has a vast catchment area which provides ample area to enjoy the speed boat/ motor boat experience to the maximum. The dam reaches up to the brim during monsoon season which enhances the natural beauty of the place. A set of small islands amidst the reservoir with Banasura Hills in the background is truly scenic and a photographer’s delight. Banasura Hills, chain of Hills is named after ancient Asura King Bana who undertook a severe penance at the hill top. King Bana was the son of Emperor Maha Bali who believed to be visiting every home in Kerala during Onam to see his people live safe and satisfied. Many people visit this place for Trekking experience. The charming mountains beacon adventure and dam site is the apposite start point for Trekking.
